Shock Defeat for Brighton's SOURCE magazine. Brighton's best listings, music, arts, culture magazine

MISS SARANDON’S PING-PONG SOCIAL CLUB
With London’s Ping-Pong Parlour having just opened and table-tennis clubs a firmly established part of the New York hipster scene, the arrival of the world’s alt-est sport in our fair town seems long overdue. Starting on Sat 7th at The Brunswick, Miss Sarandon’s Ping-Pong Social Club provides you with the chance to don your best sports-casual, enter a tournament or just have a shits-n-giggles knock around. If this isn’t enough, the soundtrack will be provided by top bands Shock Defeat! and Yokoko, the ace DJ Bugs Raplin, and live commentary from two chaps called Chris.

FOGG’S

It’s probably not too contentious to say that residents of Brighton’s Seven Dials area have never been spoilt for choice when it comes to bars that you might actually want to go to. With the opening of Fogg’s though, things are now different. With a new outdoor smoking area, fresh décor and free wi-fi, the place is now unrecognizable from its previous incarnation as the awfully named Rat & Trumpet. They’ve even got a popcorn machine! If you live nearby go and give it a whirl.

BOHO GELATO

Everybody likes ice cream, right? This gem of a boutique, nestled a few doors along from the Fishbowl and the Mock Turtle tearooms, sells a stunning 24 different types of ice cream. Handmade on the premises by proprietor Seb, and including Toffee Apple, Mojito, Chili Chocolate, White Choc Cheesecake, and classics such as Pistachio, Vanilla Malt and Strawberry sorbet, there is definitely a flavour to suit every palette. Find a flyer to get three for two – yum.

BEATS UNITED

Despite various closures of sorts, check out Jam’s newest club night. Launching Friday 13th August, Beats United bring together a mix of live acts (yes, live music still exists in Brighton, just about) and DJs. Starting it all off in true hip hop style is Blak Twang and the Rottonstra Family, Million Dan and the Dappa Crew plus reggae DJs to be announced, all for the advanced price of £5. What a bargain.

LA CAVE A FROMAGE

Coming soon to Western Road is none other than London’s finest proprietor of cheese, the seductively-titled – La Cave A Fromage. Foodies can rejoice at the unrivalled selection of British farmhouse cheeses, some being exclusive to La Cave too. The finest cheese accompaniments will also be in bountiful supply, with a fine charcuterie (that’s meat counter to you and me), artisan breads and fine wines for that perfect picnic. Heaven on a cracker.

FARMERS MARKET

‘Food, glorious food, locally-sourced farmers’ produce’ will be the chant du jour when North Road’s Farmers Market opens Saturday 14th August. Put together by the owners of Farm cafe down the road, we can all delight in shopping for fresh, Sussex-grown fruit and vegetables, along with dairy, fish, meat, game…the list is endless. If you’re not a fan of cooking though, pop down anyway for lunch and a coffee at the Farm kitchen, all cooked with the produce on sale. Buying local has never been easier.

FIREFLY TATTOOS Firefly are a brand new studio in the heart of Brighton. Located in Kensington Gardens, above Reload clothing. The artists are friendly and relaxed- you can chat about your ideas they are more than happy to sit with you and design anything that comes to your head. The studio is completely sanitary and fully licensed by the local council. Walk ins welcome and appointments can be made in advanced. Discounts with a flyer or a copy of the Source.
