Want To Write For Brighton Source?

For eighteen years we’ve been Brighton’s most popular and trusted guide to the city – first as a printed magazine, now as a website. We preview Brighton’s best gigs and events to keep Brightonians and visitors up to date.

Right now, we’re looking for a few new people to join the team. There’s always great things coming out of Brighton and we need someone to help us keep on top of it. In particular we’re hoping to find people interested in writing about local music, clubbing and art.

Local Music
Ideally you’ll be the sort of person who goes to gigs every week or compulsively checks things out online. You might be in a band yourself, or have mates that are, and you probably can’t wait to tell everyone about the great new thing you’ve just heard. As well as previewing upcoming gigs you’d be reviewing local releases for our Locally Sourced series.

Clubs & Electronic Music
Likewise, you’d need to be in the loop and know where to find interesting clubs, DJ nights and gigs. It’s a pretty wide remit covering anything from house and hip hop to synthpop and experimental electronica. You’d probably have a good grasp of Brighton nightlife, but we won’t expect you to pull midweek all-nighters on our behalf. Not many, anyway.

Arts & Culture
There’s lots of art being made in Brighton, but it’s often tucked away or only sees the light of day for a short time. We want someone who finds themselves drawn to private views, pop-ups and exhibitions – and can communicate that appeal without getting too artsy. We’ve stuck on the ‘culture’ bit because there’s often interesting things happening that don’t fit easily into categories, it’s all fair game.

These are unpaid roles, but like the rest of us you’ll be doing it for the love of it (and perhaps free tickets). We reckon it’s a good opportunity for students and budding writers to build up a portfolio – or for seasoned journos who want to try their hand at something different. You don’t necessarily need much experience (some familiarity with WordPress would be a bonus), just a knack for writing, a passion for the subject and an eye on what’s going on in the city.

There’s no great commitment: the minimum we’d expect is a couple of pieces a month. In return we’ll provide you with contacts, feedback and support. The best way to learn this stuff is by doing it. And, if you’re into that sort of thing, you can go to as many launch parties as you like.

If you’re still reading, send us an email outlining what you’ve done before and what kind of stuff you’re into. We’d also appreciate it if you could send an example of your work.
