Street Source No.10

Street Source is a regular feature showcasing photos taken around Brighton over the course of a month by one of our photographers. The idea is to share spontaneous moments around town – be it incidental street scenes, snapshots of people’s lives or images of the city as a landscape. Each month we ask a different local photographer to participate.

During December it fell to Gili Dailes to shoot the sights of Brighton as it geared up for Christmas. Here’s what she came back with.

Photographing a city throughout December, the most festive of all months, turned out to be more tricky than I’d imagined. I wanted to avoid falling into the fairy-lights Christmas trap, so I found myself looking for aesthetics anywhere but in the lights.

On top of being an exceptionally sunny December, it was also the last month of my two-and-a-half-years-of-commuting-to-London-daily saga. Instead of hopping on a train and hoping it will actually move, I changed my route and decided to walk to and from my new (Brighton based, thank god) working place, to see what little gems this much shorter journey had in store for me.

In the end I couldn’t help but take a few festive photos… It was Christmas, after all!
