Captain SKA: Protest Party, Sun 22nd April

University of Sussex Students’ Union is running a series of events called Protestival which celebrates 50 years of student activism. As part of this Captain SKA have organised a Protest Party night at ACCA on Sunday 22nd April.

The band were formed in 2010 by trumpet player and producer Jake Painter as a musical response to austerity and neoliberalism. Since then their brass-filled fusion of ska, reggae, hip hop and bashment has been headlining clubs, festivals and political events across Europe, often playing to crowds of over 40,000 people. This live show is billed as a ‘Protest Party’ with a message of solidarity and hope that spans the European continent.

In 2017 Captain SKA made international news when their anti-Theresa May ‘Liar Liar’ remix reached number four in the UK charts and number one on iTunes, and was credited with changing the result of the UK election, despite being banned by all UK radio stations.

The eight-piece band includes some of London’s finest session musicians, who have shared stages with Paloma Faith, The Streets, Culture Club, Vampire Weekend, Kwabs and even Rick Astley.
