Do you like your music delivered at top volume with its tongue firmly in its bovine cheek, by a band made up entirely of superheroes? Then The Justice Force 5 are here to save your soul. You’ll believe a band can fly…
How do a bunch of super heroes end up in a band?
GENERAL BOVINE: One night Mother Rock appeared to me in the spirit of a sexy ghost and bestowed upon me the ‘Five As One’. She told me I had to find the five greatest superheroes the world has ever seen to form a band and put joy and laughter back into the hearts of the world’s children.
Where did you go looking for superheroes?
GB: They come from all over the world. We’ve got Dr Amazing – he comes from the future, Bo Diggety, he comes from the past. Captain Courageous comes from outer space, Judgement Dave, who’s a sort of vigilante in his own right, and El Vampiro Diablo who comes from Mexico. He’s a vampire. And a Mexican wrestler.
What does your music aim to achieve?
DR AMAZING: Considering I’m from the future, I already know how important the band are to humanity. I went shopping in 3008 and I found this ep by Justice Force 5, the very one we’re promoting at this gig. The keyboard player bore a striking resemblance to me so I took it upon myself to build the time machine to take myself back to 2008.
What can mortals expect from your gigs?
GB: Our gigs are like the greatest party you ever went to, times a thousand. There’s a gladiatorial battle between good and evil at least twice a gig, we usually have guests – Spiderman’s appeared a couple of times. The Organ Grinder, our arch nemesis, always puts in an appearance and we have to battle him onstage. You could get covered in blood, you could get swung around by the arms by a demented zombie man in a hat…
What would happen if the God of Indie appeared?
JUDGEMENT DAVE: It’s funny you should say that, the Brighton indie scene is so cynical – “Oh I don’t want to go and see that ‘Darkness mark II” show, but if they came down and embraced the show… That’s the most common thing, they always say afterwards, “I was a bit sceptical before but I really enjoyed it.”
Hollywood’s gone superhero movie mad at the moment. What’s the plot for the JF5 movie?
CAPTAIN COURAGEOUS: We’re in talks at the moment; it’s going to be a 45-minute rock opera epic. It’s us saving the world, playing songs, making love to marvellously proportioned women. There’s not much money to be made in vigilantism, but movies and merchandise…
Tell us about the EP.
GB: It’s a 5 track ep called Save The World, out on February 21st. We’re putting on a massive ep launch party at the Coalition with party bags with free Justice Force 5 comics, a CD and a free Kryptonite shot on the way in. For five quid you can’t really go wrong. We’d like to think people will dress up as superheroes as well, to play homage to us.
How would you describe the sound of the EP?
BO DIGGITY: It’s superhero rock, which we would never claim to have invented, but we have defined it and brought it into the collective consciousness. It sounds like the Pokemon theme played by Motley Crue, or Thundercats being played by Guns ‘n’ Roses.
Who would win in a Justice Force 5 fight?
DA: Out of all of us? The thing is, you’ve got Captain Courageous who has actual super powers, you’ve got Judgement Dave who’s got brutal strength, I just prefer to use weapons and my mind. It depends on the battle’s criteria. Come to the show and find out I guess…
