10 Years of 1985 Music with Alix Perez Review

Between the happy housey sounds and party people swarming the seafront’s nightclub strip came a darker rumbling on Friday 7 August; this was the night that Quarters played host to Alex Perez and the 1985 label celebration tour.

Inside Quarters’ industrial-feeling dance floor, fans warmed up with a dubstep and garage set from local-scene DJ Dub Athlete before the man himself took to the decks and blew everyone away with a hugely energetic, gut rumbling set into the early hours of Saturday morning.

Belgian Perez has his roots in Drum and Bass but his output and 1985’s wingspan covers much more than that, often deep and with a high focus on the technical. For a club night, this means moving the crowd through different tempos, from light to dark and a shifting tidal soundscape. When Perez plays, you can’t not pay attention.

Dub Athlete, well known on the bass scene in Brighton and a resident at The Volks pioneering dubstep night, The Mine, was the ideal booking for this session. Their name on the bill a clear signal that this was a serious event on the listing. Brighton’s heavyweight scene alive and well and bringing big bookings into mainstream clubs in the city.
