The Wave Pictures are no strangers to the shores of Brighton. Having toured for near on 20 years, this Wymeswold trio have recorded countless albums and contributed to many a resident’s vinyl stockpile.
“You’re the brown sauce tour,” exclaimed singer and guitarist David Tattersall.
“I’ve had a fry up with ketchup on the morning of every tour for more than 15 years, but Brighton gets the brown sauce treatment” – as if we were known for being an exceptional bunch of brown sauce swigging bohemians.
“What can I say, whilst some experiment with drugs, I experiment with condiments,” Dave laughs, before opening with the title track from their 2015 album ‘Great Big Flamingo Burning Moon’, produced alongside one of Britain’s most prolific artists, Billy Childish.
Skipping between bluesy rock and blissful, lazy ballads, the set incorporated a perfect blend of feverish free-spiritedness. Leading us through a tangled web of disjointed lyrics and howling guitars, the band revisited album favourites ‘Pea Green Coat’ and ‘Too Many Questions’, with blistering solos from both Tattersall and Jonny Helm on ‘The Woods’ and ‘Tiny Craters In The Sand’. Tattersall’s lyricisms are effortlessly fluid, doling out poetic tales romanticising the ramblings of everyday toils and troubles.
We were treated to a premier of new single ‘Jim’ from latest album ‘Brushes With Happiness’. It’s a track reminiscent of traditional blues rock, a melodic remedy to soothe all those who have been waiting for another cult classic from the band.
Bellowing between beers for an encore, the audience coax the band back for a final, frenzied rendition of “Friday Night In Loughborough”. With a majority of the crowd dancing barefoot at the front of the stage and singing in unison, we were left with the audience cheering “three cheers for the three musketeers of rock and roll, The Wave Pictures”.
