Mystery Jets

GO BANANAS WITH CDS AND DVDS
If the old Ape shop was a chimpanzee, the new one on North Street is a gorilla. It’s bigger, with more rock and pop CDs, a reggae and country section, loads of DVDs and a book section. They also plan lots of instore gigs from bands. That’s something to beat your chest about.

ATTENTION CHRIS MARTIN
Lovethatstuff are starting a fair trade indoor market at the Marina (unit 9), helping at least sixteen producer groups in developing countries market their wares and earn a decent crust in the process. The gear’s all pretty cheap too, as the premises aren’t costing the organisers anything to rent, so get down there and trade fairly. It’s on every Thursday to Saturday from 11am-5pm. Write it on your hand like that Coldplay bell-end.

BADLANDS SOUNDS AT HARE & HOUNDS
Badlands Guitars have taken over the Hare & Hounds function room and turned it into Badlands Venue – a 120-capacity stand-alone identity with a bar and food menu. Bands can actually get paid if they attract thirty or more £4-paying guests, so it’s a great showcase venue for new acts or bigger bands who want to play a packed room. See musonetbrighton.co.uk for details.

NEW CUCKOO
The Koo Club has resurfaced, now with added ‘Cuc’, as the Cuckoo Club with a refit and remit both on the funky side. The first of their new residencies is muzika*, with an opening night on Saturday 11th featuring Richard Dinsdale, Jamie Green and Gary Byfield. Future nights promise live performances, team-ups with other club brands and a regular feed of fresh talent.

UNIFEST – IT’S A FEST AT A UNI
Following the sell-out Welcome Sunday Festival and the UK’s biggest Fresher’s Ball, The University Of Sussex is putting on UNIFEST in their grounds on Saurday 25th, featuring 30-plus acts and DJs including Mystery Jets, Kissy Sell Out, Krafty Kuts, Dan Le Sac, Peggy Sue and JFB, all across two outdoor marquees and three indoor arenas. Tickets are only £15 from ussu.info/unifest,

RIDDIMS AND BOOZE
The Sidewinder on Upper St James Street has launched a regular, last Friday of the month Dub In The Pub night, featuring dubstep, future dub and reggae. Now, we know you’re going to pop outside for a smoke now and again, but just watch yourselves – we don’t want you getting your collars felt by the Babylon.

POP’N’PORN
Thursdays at New Hero now mean one thing – Pop Kraft, a slice of synthetic cheese courtesy of Boogaloo Stu and The Size Zero Albino, promising saucy sexy stories and bespoke porno badges for all, courtesy of Stu’s Vadge Badgeteria.

BEETLE DOWN TO KOMEDIA
Fans of the Beetlejuice movie, burlesque and clubbing have something to celebrate on Saturday 18th – Komedia is hosting a new bi-monthly night called Trailer Trash, which is combining all three for a top night out. The theme of each night is determined by the film they screen, so let’s hope they don’t get round to aSchindler’s List evening anytime soon.
