NEW NIGHT WITH TWICE THE PERSONALITY
Micro – room two at Digital – is hosting a new night called Schizotheque, a night of bass-junk-rave-punk-tech-crunk-gutter-funk if you will. It opens on Saturday 6th and thenceforth on the first Saturday of the month. Attendees are invited to create a new character for the evening, based on computer games and tv shows, which could admittedly go one of two ways – a room full of Lara Crofts fending off a load of tumescent Triggers from Only Fools & Horses might not make for the best night out, but it’s definitely worth a look.
TRACKS WITH NO TEARS
The lottery doesn’t just help vulgar pikeys realise their lifelong dreams of tasteless excess – your shiny pound goes towards helping a load of worthy causes and schemes in the community via the Big Lottery Fund. One such beneficiary is AudioBeach Studios in Lansdowne Mews, Hove. A professional 48-track and live sound set-up, they’re offering an recording rate for unsigned bands of £160 for a seven-hour day including engineer and equipment, and £30 for a three hours’ rehearsal. COMMENDING AND RECOMMENDING
As well as being the magic behind John Travolta’s full and healthy head of hair, Plugs is also the name of the first headliner at a new monthly night at Jam hosted by esteemed Brighton blog The Recommender (see Six Of The Best, page 58), on Wednesday 3rd. Also receiving the warm glow of Recommendation are support act The Woo!Worths and the Ophelia Fancy girls from last month’s SOURCE cover dishing out freebies, as well as photographer Elini Mettyear who’s apparently setting up a Photoboosh. We don’t know what that is though.
QUIETLY CONFIDENT
People talking at gigs, a mighty pain in the arse isn’t it? Well then, you’ll be pleased to hear about the newest promoters on the block, Shhh! Promotions. Working on a non-profit basis and taking inspiration from the independent and DIY scene, they’ll be putting on anything from roots folk to off-kilter indie, with their first show being at the intimate Marlborough Theatre on the 13th featuring Golden Ghost, George Thomas and Woodpecker Wooliams. But just remember – no talking at the back, ok?
LADIES WITH A LABEL
If you’re an electronica lady or a dubstep dame you might be pre-menstrually pissed off at the lack of label representation for your wares. Well Mai Harper and Sophie Ruston have taken the reins and set up One4Ho, a female-run and centred label to redress the gender balance. Their first release is Seeking, produced by Ghettozoid featuring Yolanda, out at the end of the month, with promises of remixes from big dubstep producers to come. One4Ho.com is their internet home.
LIFE OF SHAMELESS NIGHTS
One of our favourite messy nights out, Shameless, has found itself a sexy new place to call home every Thursday – from now on this mix of everything from Madness to the Sugababes is going to be filling the room at Life on the seafront. DJs C-Dogg and Nause will be plundering the last half-century’s record box as usual, and every week some lucky sod will win a month’s rent in the entrance raffle. What’s not to like?
PUSSYCAT’S BACK
Saturday 6th sees the return of the Pussycat Club at Digital, with their illustrious ‘All That Glitters’ production, featuring multi-screen projections, performers and dancers, a dressing up box with make-overs and photo shoots and an unseemly amount of glitter. All well and good, but add in the best of funky electro, dirty house, twisted tech and indie dance and you’ve got yourself a top night out right there.
WE WANNA GIVE YOU DEVOTION
After what feels like a thousand years absence, Devotion is back in its spiritual home at the Concorde on the fourth Saturday of the month. To celebrate, there’s a new and improved club sound system, a new set-up with ravers being allowed back in the pit and Frequency DJs are residing in the bar. NEW HOPE FOR PHIL
The Hope is a great pub for live music, now hopefully it can fulfil its promise with a constant turnover of quality acts with the appointment of Phil Anvil as live music programmer. New monthly themed nights include Synthetiquette for electronic heads and Jazz Magazine for more bop-minded folk, while this month sees a Valentines show from Brooklyn’s She Keeps Bees with support from locals The Wellingtons. CAFFEINE LEVEL
As longstanding advocates of Starbucks avoidance, we’re happy to bring you news of a new independent caffeine outlet that’s opened outside the Mocha-in-every-other-shop confines of the city centre. Mammoth Coffee is at 35 Ditchling Road opposite The Level, and instead of raping the local retail landscape with identikit inter-city offerings, it’s buzzing with local creativity and high-end liquid jump-start, sandwiches and desserts. Artists and musicians are already a weekly thing, and they’re expanding into kids’ story hours, language swaps and scrap book parties. Free WiFi means you can piss about on Facebook in there while you sup, too.
A NIGHT OUT WITH ICING ON TOP
If the third Saturday of the month is a glaring gap in your social calendar, fret no longer. The World’s End on London Road is hosting what promises to be a monumentally exciting new music session by the name of Cake. Rather than flour and eggs and stuff, the ingredients for this highly baked night out are dub, breaks, electro-swing, techno, reggae, psychedelic prog and electro – with guest DJs and bands joining residents Ed Snug and Birdman. 8 til 11, free to get in. NEW FACTORY SETTING
Following the success of Fortune Factory during White Night last year, which drew 2,000 visitors to the Phoenix, it’s being expanded to a regular quarterly event. Featuring experimental performances, artworks, installations and music, the first Factory outing on Saturday 6th takes the combined talents of a dozen contributors including double act The Two Wrongies, curator and performer Victoria Melody and film-makers Junk TV. Music includes SOURCE favourites The Half Sisters, and disco deviants Passiondale.
MONDO BINGO
If your life is an eternal conflict of two-fat-ladies-liking and B&H-reeking, pensioner prole avoidance, The Underground Rebel Bingo Club could be the answer to your demented prayers. It’s basically bingo, with shouting, loud music and the telltale house rules of ‘no boring people, no old people, no wankers’. The venue remains unadvertised – you need to go to rebelbingo.com to find out where it’s at. It’s on Wednesday 10th though, we know that much.
