Joan Shelley, Thursday 10th March

Joan Shelley is a Kentucky singer with a penchant for down-to-earth neu-folk full of warmth and poetry. Her latest album ‘Over And Even’ garnered rave reviews, with Uncut giving it 9/10 and NPR Music listing it as one of the best of 2015.

‘Over And Even’ was recorded last winter with the help of Rachel Grimes, Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy and the folklorist and guitarist Nathan Salsburg who will accompany her on this tour. Shelley is perhaps reminiscent of the likes of Sam Amidon, with a heavenly Appalachian voice that brings a ringing clarity to her startling evocative story-filled lyrics. There’s a great deal of variety too in what should be a much-anticipated visit. Listen to ‘Stay On My Shore’ below for a taste of what to expect.

Support comes from former Brightonian David Morris’s Red River Dialect, whose recent album ‘Tender Gold And Gentle Blue’ has also been deservedly well-received, and from the excellent Matthew the Oxx. We recommend you get there early for both acts.
