Pop’s upper echelon: Rihanna, Drake… Oscar.
24-year-old Oscar Scheller may be in the formative years of his pop career but he has lofty ambitions. He told NME of his struggle to write for pop’s ‘anti’ hero Rihanna. “Unless you have a hit, her team won’t listen. So I need to get a hit,” he said.
May’s full-length ‘Cut And Paste’ sees the North Londoner deliver them in abundance. ‘Breaking My Phone’ is the garage rock antithesis of ‘Hotline Bling’. It sees our lovelorn protagonist smashing his burner after a drink and dial fail. Don’t worry mate, even Drake gets sacked off some nights.
‘Sometimes’ is a tribute to the best of 90s Britpop. Fizzing with nostalgia like a cherry Panda Pop, its Damon Albarn’s karaoke rendition of Elastica’s ‘Connection’. You’d be hard pressed to find a catchier track this year.
