Often when people are influenced by what they take to be 60s fashion they get the wrong end of the stick, dressing in fabrics and jarring patterns your nan might well have hung as curtains but certainly never worn on the street. On the whole, archetypal 60s styling was simple, unfussy and complementary with an emphasis on a minimal cut. The crazy clothing free-for-all would arrive later with the hippies and flower power, as fashion committed the cardinal sin of just letting itself all hang out. Had Mary Quant been dead she’d have turned in her grave.

Mar Sendra is a Spanish bartender at the Big Chill Bar in London’s Brick Lane, pictured here on just her third visit to Brighton – “It’s a lovely place,” she says. While this striking red outfit isn’t her only colour choice, she tends to keep it simple with occasional greens, blacks and whites. The fashions of the 60s might well have originated in Swinging London but they clearly touched hipsters throughout Europe, as this largely Spanish-sourced collection shows.

Cardigan from vintage store in Brick Lane
“I like it because the white edge reminds me of my grandmother’s cardigans. I usually wear clothes from the 60s – this reminds me of her as a young lady.”

Dress from Maria Del Mar
“It’s a children’s clothes store my mother owns in my birthplace, Tarragoma in Spain.”

Tights from H&M
“I was working there for a few years so I had loads of coloured tights. I used to wear them often – not just in red, in many colours.”

Shoes and bag from Carnaby
“These are from my Auntie’s vintage store, also in Tarragoma, called Carnaby – after the street.”
