Club Review: Popstars

Popstars

Popstars has been the hip young gay indie night for well over a decade now. If you’ve never been it’s probably because you don’t go out enough in London, but one of the best things about Ghetto taking over the old Candy Bar is that it’s taken residence down on the coast for Friday night stupidity.

What makes the night so special is that it absolutely refuses to take itself in the least bit seriously. With great tunes that everyone knows all night long – we were pleased with the re-emergence of Fischerspooner’s Emerge – the ratio of sing-a-longs to serious grooving is very much weighted towards the former. But that’s not to say that the collective feet aren’t getting a proper workout. Oh no, this is a club for dancing in, make no mistake. The dancefloor is rammed from start to finish, something that rarely happens at too-cool-for-school indie nights. But the abiding memory – as sketchy as they were the next morning – was just how friendly the crowd were, especially to our mixed sexuality crew. If you “do boys like they’re girls” or “do girls like they’re boys” – or even are straight as an arrow – you should find something you really love.
