RIKI TIK
Riki Tik is having a complete reboot – not just with a new soundsystem, new lights and a complete change in line-up, but a new concept too. The back section is having all the seats ripped out and being turned into an intimate club with free entry every night. The Teen Creeps lads are doing an electro boogie Thursday called Das Club Robotique. Fridays will be Eclectric, boasting future garage, broken beat and more varieties of house than you’d find on Rightmove, while AKAAKAROAR and Sneaker Social Club will make an appearance, as will free cinema and popcorn on Sundays.
STICKY MIKE’S NIGHTS
We had the news that it was all change at Jam last month and now we can fill you in on the new nights. No space to waste, so here goes. There’s new Madchester night Loose Fit and a Brighton debut for Simon Price’s legendary London indie night Stay Beautiful. Ace girl group night Da Doo Ron Ron is moving over from the Komedia, Warhol-esque self-DJing phenomenon Stick It On will make a showing and there’s at least one return for Dynamite Boogaloo. It’s shaping up to be a really fun line-up, a real rebirth for the venue.
SUB BOP
Friday 15th at the Green Door Store sees the launch of a deliciously scuzzy new night playing riot grrrl, shoegaze and grunge. Sub Bop promises tunes by Sonic Youth, Soundgarden, Black Flag, Jesus & Mary Chain, My Bloody Valentine and many others whose names adorned the sweat-soaked t-shirts of our misspent youth. It’s on from 11-4am and it’s free all night to get in and get down.
BOYLESQUE
Burlesque isn’t just size 14 women in size 10 underwear titting about with a feather boa – now fellas can get involved as well. The Brighton Institute Of Boylesque is running a workshop course at the Marlborough on Saturdays 2nd, 16th and 30th culminating in a performance in the Little Theatre. It works out at 15 hours of tuition for just £55, which seems cool. The tutors are members of probably the only all-male burlesque troupe, Der Wunderlich Revue, so they should know their stuff. Call Adriano on 07968 249870.
LOVESICK
Lovesick Recordings has been founded by Brighton producers Riskotheque, Marchmellow and Southbound Hangers who want to put out more mouth-watering bass music, and they’ve already got a bevy of releases lined up. The pigeonholes of dubstep, deep house, techno and old school garage don’t quite do these guys credit – their productions are as diverse as love’s definition, so get down to Digital on the 9th for Hospitality where they’re taking over the second room. There you can hear the Lovesick sounds, from emptiness to ecstasy via blind infatuation, all for yourself.
ONLY IN BRIGHTON
Having proved a hit during the Fringe, this street tour is becoming a permanent fixture offering an irreverent guide to our city for nosey tourists and locals alike. It’s 80 minutes of gays, greens, starlings, celebrities and more for just £7 – no booking necessary, just hang about outside the station on Fridays at 7pm and learn a load of new stuff you can impress/bore your friends with. Onlyinbrighton.co.uk has more info.
THE EARTHSHIP
At the back of Stanmer Park sits a hidden eco gem in the shape of the Earthship, a green-friendly building made of mud and car tyres that harnesses the various elements to produce off-Grid energy all year round. It’s the Low Carbon Trust’s first Earthship build and it’s available for private hire as an alternative to some dull municipal hall, as well as informative tours, the next of which is Sunday 3rd. Get in touch at [email protected].
PLACES I EAT
If you pick up SOURCE and skim past the many fascinating articles just to get to Secret Eater, then this local blog might well be for you. Places I Eat is indeed an apt name for the work, being as it is a burgeoning list of Brighton food reviews for the foodies-about-town/hunger-crazed carb blimps amongst you. We looked online and amazingly no one else seems to be doing this. PlacesIEatBrighton.wordpress.com is where to point your browser.
PIGEON
New online art and design magazine Pigeon has aspirations that are sky-high. Showcasing Brighton’s finest photographers, artists and designers, of whom there are obviously a multitude, the stylish and modern website’s off to a good start, with global influences as well as spotlights on local artists. Frequently updated with diverse content, it has the winning combination of being well-written and nice to look at. For more, visit pigeononline.co.uk
