Afrika Bambaataa, Haunt, Fri 7th June

Yes, you read that right, hip hop legend Afrika Bambaataa returns to Earth at The Haunt tonight, thanks to Scroobius Pip and his We Are Lizards club. An original 70s block party DJ, Bam’s vision of turning Bronx street gangs away from violence and into the Universal Zulu Nation, unifying the emerging music with New York’s graffiti and breaking scenes, defined hip hop in the eyes of the world. Oh, and then he invented electro with ‘Planet Rock’. Unmissable.

Stuart Huggett grew up in Hastings, writing fanzines and blogs about the town’s underground music scene. He has been a regular contributor to SOURCE, NME, The Quietus and Bowlegs. His huge archive of magazines, flyers and vinyl is either an invaluable research tool or a bloody pain. He occasionally runs tinpot record label Dizzy Tiger, DJs sporadically and plays live even less.
