Roller Derby Special, Sat 10th December

Nov 10, 2016
-
Posted by Adam Peters

After nearly seven years in Shoreham and Haywards Heath, Brighton’s roller derby daredevils finally get to showcase their shiz in the city itself in this Rockers v Rockers uncivil war with live bands and more.

Roller what? Essentially, a series of ultra violent races on a flat velodrome where the two competitors have the help of a small rugby pack, but… er… they’re on roller skates and primarily (as here) punky white collar females.

Though the line-up has gone through countless changes since the team appeared on the front cover of SOURCE mag back in 2012, the attitude of the Brighton Rockers has remained the same. In fact, two of the players we interviewed then (Mass Janeycide and Mistress Von Uber Vixen) will be bench coaches for the rival teams.

Suffice to say, this event will likely rank in the top five strangest spectacles this 213-year-old building has ever seen – and one of the best.

Competition!
We’ve got two pairs of tickets to give away to the winners of our Facebook competition. All you have to do is leave a comment answering the following question: which TV show would be improved if everyone on it was wearing roller skates and why?

However, to ensure we’ve got contact details, you need to be on the Brighton Source mailing list to qualify. You can sign up here. The competition is now closed.

Adam Peters
Adam Peters started out publishing football fanzines in the late 80s. Various jobs on video games magazines and a brief dalliance scripting photo love stories for the teen press followed. Switching media to television, he co-wrote David Walliams' first sitcom, was somehow once BAFTA-nominated and now concentrates on pre-school animation series. Coming full circle, in 2013 he launched a roller derby fanzine.
