Nestled in in the back streets away from the beach-front bars and clubs, Alphabet has a strong and deserved reputation for grown up programming that makes the most of its intimate venue space and exquisitely clear sound. It is the ideal home for a series of club nights from Brighton’s own TruThoughts record label.

Founded in 1999, TruThoughts has always been an eclectic stable, with a taste for breaks, beats, funk and smooth jazzy blends. An early home to the likes of Bonobo and Mr Scruff, it’s one of those reliable ‘music for music lovers’ names to look out for. The ‘Our Connection’ series sees label founder Rob Luis and a special guest DJ play back to back and this Friday, he was joined inside Alphabet’s achingly cool labyrinthine space by Rohan Rakhit. The the pair brought five hours of latin-infused, south asian inspired, jazzy beats and breaks and the intimate crowd gathered in the venue’s smoky, box of a dance floor loved every minute.

Strewn along the stage, for those that noticed, were copies of the TruThoughts ‘State of Play – Summer 2026‘ CD for the taking. SOURCE bagged one and it really does justice to the full range of the label’s taste, from the soulful strains of Tara Lily & King Krule to a Tim Reaper jungle mix of Potential Badboy’s track, ‘Dangerous is Dangerous’ and pretty much everything in between.
