Review: Ginger At The Hydrant

Ginger by Claire Simmons in Brighton SOURCE at www.brightonsource.co.uk Brighton’s best listings, music and culture magazine

Ginger points out that we have brought our voices with us tonight and this is certainly true with clapping and singing along from the outset. He proceeds to delight Wildhearts fans with anthem-like renditions of ‘Geordie in Wonderland’, ‘The Miles Away Girl’ and ‘In Lilly’s Garden’, working progressively through Wildhearts discography. The song lyrics remind us of bands like The Levellers and Terrorvision for their sing along factor. Ginger covers some classics including the currently relevant ‘White Riot’, ‘Take on Me’ and the theme song from Cheers. This was covered by The Wildhearts back in 2003 and remains a crowd pleaser. An appearance from some random costume characters adds a sprinkle of Ginger humour. The Hydrant upstairs is the perfect venue for this gig because it adds to this atmosphere that feels like a reunion of old friends at a bar.

From the stage Ginger has a relationship with his fans which reflects the years he has been making music and growing up with them through his music. Ginger is a great host and is friends with the audience. He says playing Brighton feels like playing a hometown gig and admittedly the vibe here tonight is something special. People that have listened to The Wildhearts since the 90s still support Ginger because The Wildhearts never signed to a mainstream record label and Ginger never sold out. His latest project is a triple album containing all new material, which can only be purchased if enough fans pledge to buy the album. It is a unique concept and is all about keeping music independent. For more details visit www.thewildhearts.com.

Ginger ends the set with ‘I Want to Go Where the People Go’ and everybody stays singing until the very end. Wildhearts fans leave feeling content. Tonight we experienced a gifted musician and songwriter on a more personal level. We also remember that music can change your life by making you happy and by making your day better. It happened to us tonight at the Hydrant.
