There’s something so bold about a girl rocking a hat made for the classic English businessman, but it just works too well, especially when the rest of the look is dressed down. Emily balances that line well, adding a smart on the knee skirt to go with the hat and pep up the band t-shirt and denim jacket. It probably helps that she’s studying graphics – there’s plenty going on here, but nothing shouts too loud.

Bowler hat from Marks & Spencer
“I’ve got quite a big hat collection. I like different types of hats. My favourite type of hat is a 20s hat called a cloche, but I like big hats as well.”

Jumper borrowed from mum
“I think she got it from a charity shop, so it’s third hand. It’s big and warm and goes over everything. I often steal my mum’s clothes.”

Denim jacket from family friend
“It’s another hand-me-down, but I think it’s from New Look. I often wear denim jackets under heavier clothes. I try and layer things up – it’s really cold today.”

Veronica Falls t-shirt from gig
“I went to see them at The Haunt two weeks ago. I’ve got a few band t-shirts but I wouldn’t say I wear them all the time.”

Skirt from Beyond Retro
“I’ve got quite a few 40s and 50s skirts, I like that retro look. I like longer skirts – I got this one because I have even longer ones in the same style but they’re difficult to walk in.”

Shoes by Dr Martens
“There’s a brown tapestry floral pattern on them that I like.”

Bag from Urban Outfitters
“It kinda matches my shoes ‘cos it’s the same colours. I like the tie-dye pattern.”
