Octopus gallery opens up in Brighton, read all about it in Brighton SOURCE magazine, Brighton's best music, arts, club and listings magazine.

FRESH NIGHTS, SIGHTS AND RETAIL DELIGHTS

RED & BLACK SALSA
Cha-cha-cha for charity this month, as Bar Rogue hosts Fridays’ Red and Black salsa nights. The launch night on Friday 3rd will feature the suave sounds of local salsa act Cuatro Monos playing alongside the r’n’b grooves of DJ Daddy Streets, DJs Alfie City and Billy él Malo. The charity bit isn’t just a collection plate for the international aid-players either, as all the funds raised by this night of passionate foot stamping go directly to the Jolaurabi school in Kenya.

IBIZA REUNION
Ah, Ibiza – the white sandy beaches, crystal blue waters and nightclub after nightclub. A place where the ravers can be free to express themselves, and young boys live out their bedroom fantasies. Sad then, for the season to be over back in grey Britain. Pussycat have come up with the perfect remedy – an Ibiza reunion party – at Digital on Saturday 4th, complete with foam party area, Manumission-style stage show, fantasy make-up artists onsite, UV cannons and all kinds of crazy horseplay to take you back to those good times.

REWIND
Yet more going back in time this month as Concorde 2 get in on 80s and 90s fever with the launch of a new night, Rewind. Launching Tuesday 28th September, the weekly blast from the past sees the venue kitted out with a Club Tropicana cocktail lounge with karaoke to belt out a ballad or two, a SNES gamestation for retro fun and free fancy dress. DJs Nause, Wasted Youth, Marky Mark and Eddie the Goatboy will be your hosts.

DR SKETCHY
As some of us have not only done life modeling, but also printed the results in this very magazine, we’re interested to read of a new class with a difference. Dr Sketchy has been packing out London classes for a couple of years with his mix of cabaret, burlesque and drawing folk in the nude – now he’s bringing the whole package to Brighton, at the Latest on Sunday 5th from 4-7pm. It’s about expression and having fun more than technical prowess, as well as getting the ride side of a load of cocktails.

NEW NEW HERO
Rumours were flying around this month about the demise of yet another Brighton venue – hipster hangout New Hero. What has emerged since is (happily) nothing more than a small change of personnel, and a minor tweak in direction. So out is 1985 and Somewhere In The Universe (soon to be re-housed), and in will be a permanent PA, meaning loads of live shows, plus some truly cutting edge club nights to follow.

OCTOPUS GALLERY
York Place Studio, a couple of doors up from the Hobgoblin, is now the Octopus Gallery. They’re currently exhibiting a collective called the Brighton Rock Artist Group, who make neat screen-printed gig posters and art prints. We’ve had a nosey through the window and it looks pretty good. They’re open Friday-Sunday from 11-5, so get something classy and rock-related for your wall. Check them out on octopusgallery.co.uk

STREETFUNK
If you know a hip hop nipper whose moves could use some pre-school polishing, Streetfunk run children’s street dance and breakdance classes across Brighton, Hove, Portslade and Lewes, with 600 kids already on board and throwing shapes in a safe and fun environment. Adult classes are starting this month too. They also do latin dance and fitness classes, go to streetfunk.co.uk and get moving.

SOUNDTRACKS
If you’re all about movies but instead of slumping in a seat mainlining popcorn you like to jig about and that in a club, then this new weekly night launching on Wednesday 28th at Jam could be for you. It’s called Soundtracks and basically plays soundtrack music all night long, Dirty Dancing to Pulp Fiction, Footloose to 8 Mile. Pretty simple concept really, but it seems to work – it’s been a massive success in fancy Camden.
