Street Source No.21

Street Source is a regular feature showcasing photos taken in Brighton. The idea is to share spontaneous moments around town – be it incidental street scenes, snapshots of people’s lives or images of the city as a landscape. Each month we ask a different photographer to participate. This time we asked Oleg Pulemjotov to share his sights of November.

I didn’t learn anything from last year. It’s November again and I find myself walking around with a camera in the dark, after work, looking for a subject. “Street Source? Me? Again? Great!!” were my exact thoughts when SOURCE approached me about it at the beginning of October. I started thinking of things I could do and just as I was getting ready to go out and get shooting the clocks went back – and overnight I lost all daylight. The exact same goddamn thing that happened last year. With weekends out of commission, I was once again constrained to working in the dark.

Luckily I remembered an idea I’ve been meaning to do for a while – illuminated street signs. It’s been a few years since I noticed the first one. It was on the corner of Norfolk Square and I used to walk past it every day. There was something very striking about it. Its strong geometric shape, succinct message and a primary colour with light thrown on it against a dark, setting sky. I thought it was beautiful and every evening when I passed it I thought of a new metaphor it contained. You would probably die of boredom if I was to tell you any of them. Anyway, I knew I had to do a series about these street signs and I am glad I finally got around to doing it this month.
