Twenty Years of Brighton Source

For twenty years Brighton Source has been an important part of the city’s music scene – first as a monthly magazine, these days as a website. The first issue of the mag came out in 1998 which makes this year our 20th anniversary. We’re allowed to blow our own trumpet on our birthday, right? In any case, we’re celebrating the occasion by hosting a photography exhibition at the North Laine Brewhouse, in tandem with Brighton Photo Fringe.

Brighton Source was a very different beast back in the 90s, as was the city itself. Though many of the early front covers seem to have mainly featured gurning clubbers, the magazine went on to establish a reputation for striking local photography. Our anniversary exhibition, which runs throughout October, showcases the work of Brighton Source photographers past and present. For instance, the above image of Abi Wade was taken by former SOURCE stalwart Kenny McCracken.

We’ll be displaying a selection of our favourite front cover photo shoots (which featured some of Brighton’s best bands of the era), a bunch of Lomo Kev’s distinctive Street Style fashion portraits (he used to stop people on the street and turn their outfits into montages) and a series of fantastic live gig shots taken by our current team of roving photographers.

To open the exhibition we’re having a launch party on Friday 28th September from 8pm. We’ve got loopy sound experiments from Bunty and garage rock from ‘gal pal duo’ Arxx. Everyone is welcome and it’s free to get in. Come for the pictures, stay for the music. Stay a bit longer to drink and reminisce.
