Brighton pop-up offers refugee-made goods for Christmas

A world away from the colour and bustle of market streets in Afghanistan or Mali, the MADE51 pop-up in Dukes Lane’s FAIR Shop brings beautiful, refugee-made craftsmanship to Brighton.

Open from 11am to 5.30pm until the 23rd December, the pop-up offers a range of artisanal goods in time for the festive season. Step inside to find holiday ornaments, accessories, and home décor all made by refugees from South Sudan to Syria, Somalia and beyond.

From scarfs embroidered by Syrian refugee women in Jordan, to shibori cushion covers hand-dyed by Congolese refugees in Kenya, to the best-selling collection of 24 unique ornaments that each carry a meaning connected to its origin, MADE51 allows shoppers to make a positive impact with each purchase this Christmas.

MADE51 works with refugee artisans who have been displaced from their homes; by selling their products to a global market, it provides an opportunity for refugees to rebuild livelihoods and re-establish their independence. At a time of increasing politicisation of refugee and migrant rights, MADE51 tells a more uplifting story and instead celebrates the talent, heritage, and skills of people fleeing violence.

The FAIR Shop was one of the first shops in the country to specialise in Fair Trade and sustainable fashion, enshrining a commitment to people and planet at the core of their business.
