News Bite: Mowgli Brighton opens, Fri 24th Feb

After weeks of anticipation (and much salivation), Mowgli Street Food opened today on Duke Street. Showcasing flavours from across the Indian subcontinent, the restaurant aims to blow the doors off the ‘traditional’ curry menu most of us are used to. And the new Brighton outlet is more than ready to attract the city’s food-loving residents.

With an extensive menu based on traditional Indian home cooking and tiffin recipes, the restaurant chain is the brainchild of leading UK restaurateur Nisha Katona MBE. The new building, with its pink walls, is what Nisha calls “very Mowgli”. “We will bring our signature twinkle, trees, and swings to create for you an Indian home from home,” she says.

Since opening in 2014, Nisha’s Mowgli has won over the nation, with 18 sites up and down the country including its new home here in Brighton. “Mowgli is not about the intimate, hushed dining experience,” she says. “Mowgli is about how Indians eat in the privacy of their home kitchens and favourite lunchtime street stalls. We hope diners will love Mowgli’s passion for healthy, fresh Indian food. The menu is entirely comprised of dishes from my family’s recipes.”

The firm emphasis on local community extends beyond Mowgli’s menu, with Nisha making charitable giving one of the company’s central business pillars. She is more than living up to that promise, with The Mowgli Trust donating up to £500k a year to its charity partners. For her chosen Brighton charity, this is good news. “To make (the city) truly our home, we will adopt Chestnut Tree House children’s hospice as our house charity to whom we will dedicate our time and resources,” she confirmed.

With dishes like fenugreek-kissed fries, Himalayan cheese toast, gunpowder chicken, green ginger and rhubarb dahl, goan fish curry, tea-steeped chickpeas, gulab jamin and the Mowgli chocolate brownie just the tip of an incredibly enticing menu iceberg – Mowgli seems a perfect fit for Brighton’s explosive food scene. And it all comes with a side dish of charitable giving to add even more warmth to every bite.

“Mowgli exists to enrich lives in the cities we go to,” Nisha says, “and we centre this aim on creating a working environment for our people that nourishes and fulfils them. That sense of joy then flows through the food and service to you, our guests.”
