Continuing the popular trend for Sunday afternoon punk/indie gigs, Bizarro Promotions present an excellent double-bill of female performers at The Albert in November.

Rachel Love was the guitarist and one of the vocalists from 80s band, Dolly Mixture who were championed by John Peel and signed to Paul Weller’s Respond label, where they were produced by Captain Sensible and Paul Gray of The Damned.

Rachel has been writing and performing again for the last two years. She now plays with two of her sons and their friends, performing tracks from her two recent solo Albums, Picture in Mind and Lyra, interspersed with a few classic Dolly Mixture songs.

Rachel will be joined by the multi-talented Helen McCookerybook. Helen was a founder member of the bands The Chefs and Helen and the Horns, both of which recorded numerous sessions for John Peel, and released material on independent labels. Now a solo artist, she gigs in the UK, Europe and beyond and features regularly on BBC6 music.

As Dr Helen Reddington, she published The Lost Women of Rock Music: Female Musicians of the Punk Era in July 2007. With Gina Birch of The Raincoats, she co-produced and co-directed the documentary film, Stories from the She-Punks: Music with a different agenda, which was released in 2018. Since 2006 Helen has lectured at the University of East London, and her second book She’s at the Controls: Sound Engineering, Production and Gender Ventriloquism in the 21st Century was published in March 2021.

Prince Albert, Sunday 10th November 2024 2:30 – 5pm
