Komedia, WHEN’S IT ON?
With just a handful of big name DJs over the last decade, the brilliantly-titled Da Doo Ron Ron is the Little Club That Could. BBC1, Channel 4, 6Music, Radio 4, the NME, Guardian, Time Out, The Times, The Pittsburgh City Paper and, phew, Grazia have all queued up to sing its praises – with backing vocals, naturally. So why is a club that plays female 60s soul such a huge hit today? Partly it’s fallen into the zeitgeist again – Duffy sold more records than anyone last year and she’s an adequate photocopy of the true soul singers that Chris King knows back to front. Also, it’s a huge amount of fun. Packed with girls on the dancefloor, it’s an un-messy, non-predatory, geek-free zone with a good balance of young and old. Just straight up good fun then? And let’s be frank, the tunes are copper-bottomed. You simply can’t go wrong with Dusty, Spector’s princesses and the Motown girls. There’ll be tunes that you know, and ones you don’t but every one has a great beat backing up those strong female vocals. As we’ve said before, a great night out doesn’t have to be complicated.
