DRIFTING ALONG THE DIAL
Online radio station Radio23.org is now hosting a new show live from Brighton every Monday night from 10pm til midnight. Going by the name The Lonesome Drifter, the show plays a wide range of genres but has a distinct folk / country / Americana flavour so expect to hear anything from the Silver Jews, The Broken Family Band right through to Yo La Tengo and with plenty more in between. Podcasts of the show are also available for download the very next day, just in case you were unlucky enough to miss it.

ANOTHER TALENT SHOW
If you’re in an unsigned band and fancy getting your hands on fifty large, there are a couple of things you can do. You could write a song that Coldplay inadvertantly rip off and then sue their asses, or you could enter and win the third Live And Unsigned competition, whose auditions are rolling into town in January. Last year’s winners were The Detours from Glasgow, who seem to have taken a definite detour around Being Successful since their big win, but you’re from Brighton aren’t you? Do us proud. BEACHDOWN BUT NOT OUT, APPARENTLY
The latest news on the depressing Beachdown saga reaches our weary ears… Those unfortunates who haven’t yet managed to get ticket refunds yet – and we imagine that’s a fair few of you – will no doubt be less than fully reassured by the news that the Festival has decided it doesn’t need to go into liquidation and is planning on trading its way out of its legal quagmire. Since magic beans have been done before, the idea is… Beachdown 2010! Yes, the plan is to try, try again next year, when everyone will definitely have forgotten all about this year’s shambles. Punters, stallholders, bands – run for your lives!

BATTLING B-BOYS
Some rap battles over the years have ended unpleasantly, with Tupac and Notorious BIG falling out over who was the dopest, or something, and getting killed to death for their troubles. Nowadays it’s where you at, not where you from, apparently, and battling is restricted to the mic in an 8-Mile stylee. If this sort of thing is up your street, get down to Don’t Flop at Hector’s on Sunday 29th, where you can throw shapes to hip hop DJ sets and live performances as well as representing your hood and spitting some rhymes, dreaming of sunnier climes with lager and limes. We’re a shoo-in.

IT’LL BE ALL WHITE ON THE NIGHT
We all know how good the local music scene is but the French had a chance to find out about Brighton’s musical talent when the council and Melting Vinyl took a busload of the city’s finest over to Amiens’ version of White Night festival last month. Melodic & Me, The Half Sisters, PRJCT MYHM, Transformer, MSG, and AD/DK were joined by our editor as DJ for a great night that had the venue completely full from the word go. A huge success that was followed by the cream of Amiens performing the other leg of the exchange, at our White Nights the following week.

MARK HORWOOD
We found out about this just after our October issue went to press, but we wanted to pay our respects to Mark Horwood, the Mummers’ keyboardist, who died on September 7th. It seemed like the band were poised for big things after appearing on Jools Holland earlier this year and were due to be appearing at Bestival and End Of The Road. According to a statement on their MySpace blog, the band plan to continue his legacy with everything they do from now on – in the meantime our thoughts go out to them, Mark’s friends and family.
