OLD FASHIONS, NEW PASSIONS
We’re all about a local success story, especially when the economy is a mere pound coin behind Zimbabwe’s, so we thought we’d bring you news about Natasha Bailie’s new online vintage fashion venture. More than just a click-to-buy affair, there’s fashion blogs and frock-based chat alongside her careful vetting process that makes moth-eaten sifting in smelly old shops a thing of the past. Vogue have already raved about the wedding dresses, coats, bags and shoes on sale, so bag a stylish pre-loved nargain at natashabailie.com

FANCY DRESS – GET IN FOR LESS
What could be better than a night of funk, breaks, big beat, house and old skool hip hop, you ask? All of that with the added bonus of fancy dress, would be our reply. Soup? Is a new night launching on Friday 12th at the Latest Musicbar, from 10.30pm til late, and rocking up in a gorilla suit might be a bit sweaty but you’ll get in for £3.50. There’s also StreetFunkbreakdancing promised as well as an apparently hula-hooping girl. Soupanyone.com will tell you more.

WIRE IN THE DISCO
The Engine Rooms are launching an intriguing new night on Thursday 4th called If Reagan Played Disco. It’s named after a Minutemen song, and if that means anything to you you’ll no doubt wet yourself at their tagline, ‘sounds from the counter culture, 1979-1990’. Politically informed dance music is the order of the day; Public Enemy, The Fall, Talking Heads, Wire, all of that kind of stuff. If you think spiky guitar pop began with Franz Ferdinand, get down and get yourself an education.

HOVE, ACHROMATLY
If last month’s festival feast of Open Houses has left you with an art appetite, you should head over to Hove to the spiffing new Achromat gallery on Queens Place. Guest artist for June is Robert Lye and there’s also a Self-Published Market Weekend, an evening of video art and an installation by performance artist Ryan Styles. Check out achromatgallery.com for more information.

WIN IF YOU’RE SINGING
If you’ve been sat in Horatio’s on the pier and wondered what it might be like to do karaoke in a more selective environment, then Lucky Voice are making it your lucky day. Opening up on Black Lion Street, they have seven karaoke rooms over three floors, where you and your pals can sing to each other without loads of strangers laughing down their sleeves. You can control the lighting and volume and even press a ‘thirsty’ button to summon more booze. Karaoke with class.

RAW POWER
Had your gas and electricity cut off? Relax, who needs to cook food anyway? Kate Magic is starting new monthly classes at the Friends Meeting House on Ship Street, giving you the lowdown on raw food nutrition, detoxing and generally being holistic about what you shove down your greedy gob. June’s class is on Saturday 13th from 1-4pm. You can also buy Kate’s cakes and chocolate and get discounts on other raw gear, To book visit rawliving.eu.

SOUND OF THE UNDERGROUND

Saturday 20th sees another new night opening at Digital – FutureProgTechAdventure promises to deliver underground sounds from as far afield as Romania, Sweden and the Yorkshire Dales. Hosts Pav and LuQas are long-time Slackers Convention residents, but this night promises an altogether techierplaylist. First out on the decks is Johan ‘Jariten’ Soh’s Swedish label, Sound Of Habib, with Beta, Mesmer and Clodhoppa.

RUBY RUBY RUBY RUBY
If you like to shop without getting off your arse, point your mouse at redhotruby.com, a new fashion boutique on the internet. It has a pleasing undercurrent of rockabilly tattooism to it, but has the essence of Brighton shot right through it. Juliette Wills only sells Fair trade and organic cotton clothes on the site, and she’s also written a great Brighton guide and history. Ethical and funky, it’s the place to fill your secure online basket.
