Queen’s Park Road’s The Islingword is playing host to a range of local storytelling talent this Friday. Straight talking rap rockers Brunt Poetry headline, playing songs from their recently released CCTV EP, its reflective vexation therein translated into powerfully catchy hooks which have been described by Smashed Vinyl as ‘their best effort yet’. First track, ‘Ian Dury’, possesses lush Ash-like melodic indie strumming, with singer Miles Townsend’s bolshy Billy Braggadocio vocals forming a likeable contrast.
‘Swimming in Ink’ ups the tempo with punchier guitar grooves. But it’s the irony of 2015’s ‘Open Mic Knight’ with its courtly riff that’ll doubtlessly woo the crowd. They’re deservedly making a name for themselves, having just confirmed a support slot for Sleaford Mods. If you like your rap intelligent ‘n’ your roll politically-tinged it’s well worth the climb up hilly Hanover to see these guys in all their RATM/Mike Skinner/Ocean Wisdom infused glory.
Support comes from local four piece punk/metal heavies Bigman Solution and introspective acoustic blues rap from Matt Murphy.
