Glitterati Every Tuesday @ Digital
Fast becoming the quintessential student night in Brighton, Glitterati fills Digital to capacity every Tuesday. DJ Raph, DJ Praiz and DJ Minute play hosts under their moniker ‘No Long $tories’ – a name indicative of their rapid mash-up mixing style that barely leaves you time to take a swig. Expect dancefloor bangers from funky house, garage and bassline to r’n’b, indie and drum’n’bass. If you can keep up with the pace, get down to Digital for an evening brimming with both ear and eye candy. (ZC)
House Is A Feeling Concorde 2 Sat 6th
Once upon a time – before all this electro stuff – house music was about soul, and nobody had more soul than Robert Owens. The voice of Chicago house, he’s responsible for some of the most affecting vocal dance records of all time, not least Frankie Knuckles’ Tears. We can’t remember him being in Brighton for the last decade, so if you’re into classic 80s house make sure you don’t miss what could be his only Brighton appearance before you’re too arthritic to dance. Balearic Jukebox The Om Bar Sat 6th
The Balearic Brothers are back for their monthly residency at the luscious Om Bar on June 6th. If you haven’t discovered this magical haven yet, then here’s the perfect opportunity to sample its splendour. This month’s guest DJ is Phil Mison, an Ibiza veteran having been resident at Café del Mar as well as putting together the Real Ibiza compilations. Balearic Jukebox promises “the most joyous and delirious musical selections possible, sourced from a lifetime love of eclectic musical masterpieces.” (KM)
Donky Pitch The Jazz Place Thursday 11th
In Finland they call it skweee; over here it’s more commonly labelled wonk. As both of those brilliantly evocative words suggest, this relatively new style of down-tempo bass music is entirely wonderful and now, as was probably inevitable, Brighton has its very own night to celebrate it. Imagine if Dubstep had taken its cues not from the macho doominess of drum’n’bass, but from 80s computer games, Dilla-esque hip hop beats and glitchy electro music; wouldn’t that be more fun? Of course it would. Bristol’s Gemmy comes to headline the first instalment of what looks like a promising new addition to our town’s clubbing landscape. (DA)
Quantic Album Launch Audio Fri 12th
Last time we spoke to Quantic he was living in Colombia making some serious grooves with some very serious Latin musicians. We’re not sure if that journey into the past has had any effect on the Tradition In Transition album being celebrated here, as the postman seems to have nicked ours. When Quantic was a full time Brightonian we might have underappreciated his carefully thought out post-jazz grooves cos we’re chomping at the bit to see him return. (JK)
Stay Sick! Hector’s House Sat 13th
Things are really hotting up this month and that’s certainly true at Stay Sick! The wonderful Dragster bring their blend of voodootrashabillypunkrock’n’roll to the stage and the Stay Sick! boys will be spinning the very finest in garage, punk, post-punk, trash, psychobilly & filthy rock’n’roll. On top of that you get free pool, three screens of weird and wonderful projections, pints for £1.99 and best of all it’s free so arrive early. (GA)
Herve At Blah Blah Blah Digital Sat 13th
It’s full credit to Blah Blah Blah that they can grab guests of the quality of fidget house leader Herve – they’ve been carefully plugging away at the jumpy electro sound for two years now and have claimed it as their own. And full credit to Herve for being able to fill a club like Digital. His refusal to tone down his productions has led to fanatical reactions to his over the top releases. The padwan of Switch is now the master. (JK)
Brighton Beat Club Al Duomos Sat 13th
Taking that retro vibe that always made the Funky Fish such a top Quadrophenia-esque night out, the BBC is kicking off a 60s night of Tamla Motown, northern soul, beat and garage (that’s 60s garage, not that bellend DJ Spoony and his mates). Coming from the brains behind Da Doo Ron Ron, Holdup! And Kick Out The Jams, this is guaranteed to be a relentless succession of dancefloor crackers. Sitting down is not an option (NC)
Kitsune Maison Showcase Audio Fri 19th
The none-cooler Kitsune convoy drives back into town from Paris after getting its nose bloodied by Annie Mac last time around. This smaller venue should suit them better though, as the line up with indie electro future-stars should have Audio packed out. Autokratz, Chew Lips and Crystal Fighters will all hit the stage, the former to promote their own debut of crunchy beats and hollered vocals. Apart from Ed Banger, we can’t think of a hipper French dance music label. If you haven’t got one of their zeitgeist-riding compilations yet, get down and find out what all the fuss is about. (JK)
Milk Teeth Micro Friday 26th
After last month’s bitchin’ Baltimore Bananas Party, Milk Teeth is back with another night of skankin’ 90s anthems. Immaculately dressed residents FiFi Pedro and Oh-My-Neuf will be kicking your nostalgia gland square in the nuts with the sounds of vintage bitch rap, grime, hyper bass, thug and hip hop. Showing your teeth is fast becoming the new black, so worth checking what the fuss is about. (DC)
Battlejam Audio Fri 26th
Beardyman = brilliant. JFB = brilliant. Battlejam = brilliant. That’s all there is left to say. Best fiver you’ll spend this weekend. (JK)
Devotion Concorde 2 Sat 27th
We don’t often write about Devotion as its huge line-ups mean that it’s normally sold out before anyone that’s not in the scene is even aware it’s happening. If there’s any club you need to get tickets for in advance, then it’s this one. A night with Ed Rush third on the bill is going some, but Goldie and Grooverider, now out of chokey, make this a killer drum’n’bass line up from start to finish that can’t be ignored. Get down to Rounder and buy your ticket right now. (JK)
