ADVENTURES AFTER DARK
Coalition Wednesdays
There’s a lot of fun happening on midweek night but this new weekly from Coaltion promises a focus on the music, showcasing a new live band every Wednesday, with a bit of indie, 80s pop and 90s hip hop spliced in between. Straight out of the gates the line-up is great, with Primary 1, Shy Child and Good Dangers all set to play in the coming months, and all for only a pound entry, we really can’t argue with those prices. WAREHOUSE •
Audio Saturdays
The talk around town this month has been just what the Warehouse teaser ad in SOURCE was all about. Audio have revealed that it’s their new Saturday night concept. Like Summer Of Love (that really was a long summer) it’s free, as long as you get there before 1am. From that point your fiver entry is invested in some great underground, upcoming electro based acts. Jokers Of The Scene – who throw the kitchen sink at the decks before blowing them up with electro dynamite – join Blogger’s Delight boss Casper C for the launch on Saturday 2nd but Thomas Gandy, Cassette Jam and transformer also pop in. Most excitingly Kill Em All are throwing a Halloween party on the 30th with Filthy Dukes and Stopmakingme. Very promising start. (JK)
DARREN EMERSON
Coalition Sat 2nd
It’s been so long since Darren Emerson was in Underworld that people have stopped mentioning it. Now they talk about his Underwater Record label. Except that’s all over with too, but worry not. Tonight is the Brighton launch of his new imprint Detone. ‘Decisions’, his latest for the label, echoes early Underwater or Futureshock, but with a more techno edge, while the label debut, ‘Gracelands’, gave the African influences you’d imagine. All of which means we’ve not sure exactly where he’s at musically. Knocking out good tunes, if nothing else. “Massive” special guests are promised. (JK)
ALICE RUSSELL
Coalition Sat 2nd
We love Alice Russell. Unlike American soul singers who seem to take it all way too seriously, Alice has got a wicked, wicked sense of humour and can always be found poking fun at herself or someone else. She’s got so much presence on stage, yet backed up by TM Juke and the rest of her band you’d think she could get lost. But her voice powers right past the horn section, the backing singers and the super-solid rhythm section. A force of personality both on and off stage. (JK)
WASTED UV RAVE
The Honey Weds 6th
It’s such a brilliant idea we can’t quite believe that not everyone is doing it. Get the glowsticks out, persuade everyone into flouro colours, blast the lasers and lights and fire of confetti bombs for complete visual overload. Throw in loads of free stuff, including drinks and you just know where all the fresher’s are going to be. (JK)
HOSPITALITY
Digital Sat 9th
The Hospitality label has carved out an eternal name for itself in the last decade, signing and helping break the biggest producers in liquid drum’n’bass, from High Contrast to new boy Netsky. Tonight the label’s esteemed boss London Elekricity tops the bill with Danny Byrd backing him up. The latter’s just released his return-to-the-scene tune ‘Ill Behaviour’ which is garnering major radio play, and the former is the grandaddy of panty-moistening liquid beats, so as always this night’s going to do serious damage. (ZC)
BRIGHTON INSTITUTIONS
Globe Weds 13th
This is a nice little idea from The Globe, and we were delighted to be asked. Basically, a part of Brighton’s fabric gets asked to come down and play some records, have a bit of a party and hang out. If we weren’t playing it we’d describe it as our Unsung Heroes column but with music – but we won’t say that cos it sounds arrogant. Pop in and see us if you fancy hearing the music that makes the office stereo get pumped, want to talk to us about contributing, or even just want to find out why we never use picture bylines. Actually, just come and say hello. (JK)
BEARDYMAN •
Digital Thurs 14th
It’s perhaps a good marker of Beardyman’s rise that he’s now appearing in the larger capacity Digital, rather than his familiar turf of Audio. If you’ve never seen the astonishing beatboxing and live sampling champion in action, then rest assured that, no matter what size venue, his skills are incredible. Expect the unexpected from this Deus Ex Barba, with a night that promises to mix up purest fun with purest talent. (TR)
KISSY SELL OUT
Concorde Thurs 14th
Since 2006 Kissy Sell Out has been the quintessential electro DJ everyone wants to get their mixing fingers on. His eccentric production style and energetic sets accrued him much attention, not least from Radio One where his slot is now a must-listen for all dance music enthusiasts. He’s a huge champion of unsigned music so you can expect to hear a wealth of new disco, party anthems and ravetastic tracks this evening. (ZC)
SCRATCH PERVERTS
Concorde Sat 16th
The multi-award winning DJ trio need little introduction after being staples of the dance music scene for nearly 15 years now. Tony Vegas, Prime Cuts and Plus One mix, blend and indeed scratch the finest cuts from dubstep, hip hop and drum’n’bass. They never fail to rock whatever club is fortunate to have them grace the decks and so catching their live show tonight at Concorde is an absolute must for any beat-nut. In support is new dubstep darling Katy B as well as Emalkay, whose grinding tune ‘When I Look at You’ solidified him as one to watch earlier this year. (ZC)
BULLION
Fortune of War Sat 16th
Everyone’s favourite seaside smugglers’ inn plays host to Bullion, a UK producer who’s been favourably compared to Flying Lotus and Hudson Mohawke, and acclaimed by Gilles Peterson and Mary Anne Hobbs’ replacement Benji B, as well as lauded in LA and New York. His pared-down, beat tape grooves are a welcome change from the repetitive dubstep-by-numbers many are peddling. (JMM)
FAKE BLOOD
Digital Sat 16th
Brighton seems to have become a home from home for this pioneer of the fidget house genre, as he returns to Digital with his basslines as fat as a Texan burger. Surely by now we don’t need to revisit the initial secrecy surrounding Touchè’s identity do we? Um. Anyway, support comes from the Blah Blah Blah team, who are so good at smashing their Digital residency that it often forces 10% more out of the headline act. (TR)
JEHST
Jam Sat 16th
Tonight features promoters Doctor’s Orders’ repeat prescriptions Spin Doctor and Rusty Ryan as well as marvellous medicine in the form of one of the UK’s best known and Brighton’s most loved MCs, Jehst. Since ‘Return Of The Drifter’ became the most over-played song since James Blunt’s ‘Beautiful’, Jehst has been delighting hip hop audiences with clever lyrics and dope beats. Grab your Red Stripe, nod your head, and let the Doctor’s Orders cure your winter ills. (JMM)
KRS-ONE
Concorde 2 Fri 22nd
One of the original and historically most important hip hop artists, KRS-One is a massive draw for the Concorde in this special late night show from 11 til 4am. Unlike many of his later contemporaries, he eschewed the trappings of bitches and bling, preferring to use his profile to promote peace, but beneath his laudable moral outlook he still kicks some killer beats. You probably won’t have seen him before, and you might not get to again, so make sure you’re there. (NC)
THROWING SNOW
Riki Tik Sat 22nd
Multi-pie-fingered Throwing Snow has quietly been building a reputation for himself. As the founder of experimental label A Future Without he’s more than proved his musical mettle for spotting new talent, and his website is awash with free downloads of new downtempo electronica and chilled dubstep. Tonight is a completely free opportunity to check out what he’s currently got his ears tuned to: expect to hear progressive, jangly tunes from his latest release plus a sneaky play of his upcoming Hyetal remix. (JMM)
TODDLA T
Audio Fri 22th
Although he popped out of Sheffield in the wake of the Arctic Monkeys the indie kid-looking Toddla T is straight up ruffneck, throwing dancehall and hip hop into electro and garage with full force. His Fabric Live mix from last year is – according to our designer Matt – “an absolute banger” and certainly after productions for the likes of Roots Manuva he’ll come loaded with a bass heavy record bag. For the two gigs following this Audio appearance Mr T is in Fabric and then Santos in New York so you know the boy is firing. (JK)
CHEW THE FAT!
Audio Fri 29th
Continuing its Brighton outreach programme, the Chew the Fat! London club night brings such a heavyweight line-up down to our shores it’s bound to blow the tweeters in Audio’s speakers. Foamo leads the dubstep brigade with his rave driven dancefloor killers followed by Reso whose grimey production style promises to bring some filthy tunes to the table. Last but not least is Warrior One, two producers making reggaeton-inspired basslines that’ll have you daggering before you can say BRRRAP! (ZC)
TEEN CREEPS •
The Hope Fri 29th
As part of the massive land-grab The Hope have recently made for proper underground indie club nights, Teen Creeps debuts there this month. To mark the migration, they’ve got one of SOURCE’s favourite underground indie bands, Phantom to christen it. Phantom consist of Sam from the Maccabees and Tic from Jack Peñate’s band, and they make the most intense black-synthed, R&B-inflected indie you’ve ever daggered to. Because of the members other commitments they hardly ever play, so this is a rare, exciting treat. (MB)
ALEX CELLER
H Bar Sat 30th
Probably the H Bar’s biggest booking yet sees Greek ex-pat Alex Celler swing down from London in a month of international gigs. Though he’s only had his studio for half a decade there’s a real mid 90s feel to Alex’s productions but with a hint of that darkness of the last few years of the Ibizan underground. Think Loco Dice remixing Danny Tenaglia. If you’ve been following his productions and mixes on Cocoon, Buzzin’ Fly and Freak N Chic you might be surprised to find him in such an intimate spot in Hove, but don’t question how he got there – just lock yourself into his hypnotic percussion.
