When alternative American rock was getting loud and hairy in the late 80s, Galaxie 500 stood apart, their slow, soft psychedelia owing more to the gentler side of the Velvet Underground and the childlike wonder of Jonathan Richman. After three cult albums, they split, singer and guitarist Dean Wareham forming Luna while his bandmates stayed together as Damon And Naomi. Wareham’s first full solo album, produced by like-minded voyager Jim James of My Morning Jacket, came out in the spring and is an open-hearted collection of glistening, blissful songwriting. Low key, highly recommended.
