Johanna Bramli, Thurs 21st March

An added dimension to many of the contemporary music gigs at the Attenborough Centre over the last couple of years has been the support slots which have highlighted the depth of Brighton’s own electronic/experimental creative community. Penelope Trappes opened for Basinski, I AM FYA for Creep Show, MATTHS warmed the crowd up before Cortini’s cool ambience and Sussex Uni student Nina Kahout delivered some lush avant pop ahead of Gazelle Twin’s breathtaking show in November.

Now with IDM spearhead Clark’s performance a couple of weeks away this pattern is set to continue with the recent announcement that the support will be Johanna Bramli. The French-Swedish, Brighton-based sound artist has always revelled in the diversity of projects that electronic music feeds into. She has written interpretative dance scores, a medium she engaged with during her 2020 residency at The Rose Hill, as well as collaborated on several large-scale audio-visual installations at the Brighton Festival. She even directed a short film following the late great Damo Suzuki at work back in 2011.

Focusing on the music side, Bramli was/is part of kosmische-pop leaning duo Fröst with Fujiya & Miyagi’s Steve Lewis, she co-founded the all-female noise/feedback choir The Larsens and has released her first EP, the cinematic ‘Spirals’, on the AK/DK-associated imprint Little Miss Echo Recordings. In her solo work Johanna Bramli details her sweeping soundscapes with intricate, atmospheric found sounds while seeking out melody and emotion. Her performances are rare so definitely schedule getting to the Clark gig early.

Attenborough Centre for Creative Arts, Thursday 21st March 2024, 8pm.
