“Not for sissies,” was how Lauren Laverne described Bristol noise rockers Spectres on her 6 Music show. The group enjoyed this description so much they threatened to put it on a t-shirt. And if Lauren’s definition of a sissy is someone who’s scared of getting their ears syringed with the blunt end of a Fender Jaguar, then she’s probably right.
Yes, Spectres take their cues from classic Creation Records bands like My Bloody Valentine and Swervedriver, and inhabit the abrasive end of a daftly named genre which shall not be mentioned (ok, ok: “sh**gaze”. Happy now?). If you saw them at DRILL in December, chances are you’ll agree they do it better than most.
Their debut LP ‘Dying’, out Feb 23rd, looks set to be among the Sonic Cathedral label’s flagship releases. Prove you’re no sissy by checking them out at Sticky Mike’s Frog Bar on 5th March.
