Pete Astor is no stranger to Brighton and this time he’s brought his seminal 80s indie band The Loft, in support of their forthcoming, ‘debut’ album ‘Everything Changes Everything Stays The Same’ which is being released on Tapete Records on 14th March.
The Loft notched up an impressive list of firsts for Creation Records’ artists back in the mid-1980s. They were the first Creation band on TV, first to hit the top of the indie chart, first to be invited on to a major UK tour and the first Creation band to record a coveted BBC radio session – for Janice Long’s Radio One show in 1984. Then they famously split up onstage at Hammersmith Palais on the last date of a tour with The Colourfield.
Having released just one single and an EP first time round, The Loft have now recorded their debut album for Tapete Records, home to Lloyd Cole, Robert Forster, Comet Gain among many notable others.
The album was recorded in Hackney last August and produced by Dexys’ Sean Read with the original Loft line up of Pete Astor(guitar /vocals) Andy Strickland (guitar), Bill Prince (bass) and Dave Morgan (drums).
Yes Today, the project of Essex/Devon-based songwriter Amy Glover, will open the show. The songs, which speak of unease and unbelonging, are nestled somewhere between psych folk and country melancholy, with hints of post-punk experimentalism. The music is conveyed with honest, sometimes fragile vocals that interweave with Amy’s delicate guitar wanderings, the graceful meanderings of Claire Keech’s clarinet, the sensitive textures of Amy McKenny’s violin, and grounded with Roy Thirlwall’s assured, yet subtle basslines. Yes Today released their debut album, ‘Still’, in 2024 – recorded on tape and produced by James Hoare (Penny Arcade/Veronica Falls/Ultimate Painting) in Totnes, Devon.
Tickets are flying out for this afternoon show so don’t linger and hope to pay on the door as it is likely to sell out.
