The Monochrome Set, Sat 19th October 2024

The Monochrome Set return to The Con Club to promote their new album Marc Riley Sessions from 2011 to 2022. The band features original Monochrome Set members Bid (guitar/vocals) and Andy Warren (bass) with Athen Ayren on keyboards and Stephen Gilchrist on drums.

The band formed in 1978, and were heavily influential in the post-punk scene that evolved after the initial scorched earth of punk. The band’s early releases were on the legendary Rough Trade Label before signing with Virgin offshoot Din Disc. They also released several albums on the Cherry Red label, making a notable appearance on that label’s classic Pillows and Prayers compilation.

Though The Monochrome Set split in 1985 the next decade saw several reunions for both live gigs and further studio recordings. After a hiatus of over a decade, the band reformed full-time in 2010 and have since toured all over the UK, Europe, Japan and the USA, whilst also releasing seven new, critically acclaimed, studio albums. Now in their 46th year, they are beginning a new series of gigs promoting their latest album and playing songs old and new.

There’s a superb choice of support in Manchester-based Tigers & Flies.

Tigers & Flies pounce forth with noodling guitars providing the punctual counterpoint to slick serenades of Manchester life. Splashes of cowbell and trumpet renders Tigers & Flies as an eclectic and energetic band that land somewhere between A Certain Ratio, with their punk funk brassy sound, and The Fire Engines, in their ability to write instantly memorable indie pop songs. With the aforementioned in mind, Tigers & Flies’ sound will catch you, draw you in and convince you that all the buzz is worth the while.

Two lovely performances from actors at the top of their game, but a script and production that could benefit from more work.
