One of the most beautiful flowers to emerge from the Brighton live scene in recent years has been the gradual unfurling of the folky post-rock glory of Van Zon.
We first arrived late to a support slot they played at the Hope and Ruin. From the second the door closed behind us, our jaws were on the floor, leaving us hypnotised rabbits in the face of some stunning headlights. We have not been late since and have developed a deep love for this highly musical bunch.
Perhaps it is the fact we finally have a guitarist in town who plays his instrument the correct (lefty) way round, perhaps it is the effortless way they communicate with each other on stage, or perhaps it is the infectious glee that lights up their eyes as they lose themselves in the music.
Now you too can wrap yourself in this blanket of sound in the comfort of your own home, for their debut EP ‘All Things, All One, Aglow’ is available on the usual streaming and download channels.
Another band Van Zon were quick to recommend to us was Glass House Red Spider Mite, who are purveyors of prefect Slinty goodness. Sure enough their show downstairs at the Hope for last year’s Homegrown nearly tore the house down in all its glory. They too have been busy in the studio and have an EP ‘What Do You Mean The Monster?… hahaha’ out this month.
It sounds like the perfect excuse for a gig, and low and behold we will be treated to the opportunity to hear both records played live on the glorious Alphabet system.
They will be joined on the night by Catbandcat who are making the journey down from Manchester to bathe us in their glitchy folk.
