DJ Yoda Review

It’s always exciting when three huge names appear on the same line-up. We, Like You specialise in putting on funk and soul nights around the country and tonight they’ve brought DJ Yoda, A-Skillz and Krafty Kuts to the Concorde.

A-Skillz is first up and proves straight away he knows how to get a party started. He turns a classic soul anthem such as Marlena Shaw’s ‘California Soul’ into a bass-heavy, funky party tune – a typical A-Skillz combination of singalong anthems and dirty electro sounds. The crowd is jumping and singing and cheering and grinning with each new song. The warm breeze coming in through the open doors almost makes us feel like we’re on holiday, dancing and drinking to the sounds of electro-funk as if there’s no tomorrow.

A-Skillz is the perfect warm-up act for DJ Yoda. As the latter takes over the crowd’s attention is turned to two huge screens at the front of the room, our senses bombarded by DJ Yoda’s famous audio-visual set. Yoda uses tongue-in-cheek visuals to highlight his fun and energetic music. He also creates some incredible mash-ups in the way that only a true musical genius can do – who would have thought that The Cure’s ‘Close To Me’ mixed with Bob Marley’s ‘Three Little Birds’ would make such an amazing party tune?

Yoda flows through more genres than you would’ve thought physically possible within the space of one set, moving smoothly from Green Day’s ‘American Idiot’ to The Trashmen’s ‘Surfin Bird’. His visual clips are perfectly timed with his set and help to draw us into the music. We all know what it’s like to sit at home and waste hours watching funny YouTube clips, well DJ Yoda gives us an excuse to do that whilst being out and listening to amazing music at the same time – what a great combination.

Krafty Kuts rounds off the headliners with a typical bass-heavy, funk-filled set that keeps everyone dancing until the early hours of the morning. If you’re a fan of funk, soul and electro, We, Like You’s nights are definitely ones to look out for.
