Live: Junip

Junip live review featured in Brighton SOURCE magazine, Brighton's best music,arts,club and listings magazine.

Junip are growing up, they comment on the lovely weather ‘by the ocean’, and then softly draw us in with their melodic, soothing tunes. They can’t fail to make make you feel you are drifting away on a gentle tide of some start-of-the-week downtime. They genuinely play nicely as a group, no egos to massage here.

It’s all for the greater good as their casual disposition invites a relaxed, almost dinner party mood in the small audience gathered. A bit more narrative from the guys wouldn’t go a miss but you get the impression they like doing their talking through their blissful music in songs like ‘Always’. Slow beats and simple drum patterns are the order of the day and, in the main, the set is from the new album, Fields.

It’s not surprising to see a mixed crowd gathered here. Junip appeal to a wide fan base, they offer an open invitation to take whatever it is you need from their atmospheric sound, which intensifies as the band start to get really in the zone. The excellent In Every direction is another dreamy hit, almost too cool for school and is fast becoming a firm favourite. All in all, a very nice way to start the week.
