Review: Rumble On The Beach III

Brighton Rumble III in Brighton SOURCE at www.brightonsource.co.uk Brighton’s best listings, music and culture magazine

We arrive as The Devil Wrays’ ‘Tear It Up’ sets the pace with their quick tempo and chunky bass flicks. They introduce us to the concept of stand-up bass-driven punk rock known as psychobilly and the guys demonstrate a highly skilled instrument playing ability. Their sound reminds me of bands like The Living End and Dead Kennedys. Little movement on stage does not deter from the quality music The Devil Wrays play, but their performance is strongly aided by a superb lighting rig.

The Peacocks come on looking like The Hives and play an explosive rockabilly influenced punk rock set. The songs are catchy and the singing actually sounds a bit like Joe Strummer. Unfortunately the songs do all sound very similar. After a while it gets repetitive, almost verging on boring. Some prefer to shift towards the bar to witness some fancy footwork and girls in polka-dot dresses spinning around lots. The Rumble’s DJs are on top form as always and bust out some classic tunes throughout the course of the night.

The rumble never fails to impress and each one brings something different. Tonight’s Rumble was organised by Dave Mumbles. Catch up with him and Brighton Rumble’s other rocking DJs at Sticky Mike’s Frog Bar on 15th October. The Rumble was a knock out once again and we await the next one with great anticipation.
