Sea Monsters Day 5 Review

This year the Sea Monsters festival has seen collaborations with the likes of Love Thy Neighbour, Teen Creeps and Punk V Hardcore. Tonight it’s linking up with Slip Jam B for something a little different.

First up is one of our favourite Brighton duos, DA-10 with their experimental electronic mish mash of sounds, featuring MPC master 10 David and synth genuis Danalogue. DA-10 really are quite superb, keeping the crowd mesmerised with their use of bouncing beats over vibrant electronica soundscapes.

Next up are the rather rowdy rap crew Rum Committee, consisting of four MCs and five producers. With bags of attitude and a very boozy manner they belt out track after track to very little reaction, regularly referring to the audience as a “bunch of corpses”. This obviously goes down like a lead balloon. The clear star of the rap outfit is the tattooed and talented giant known as Rag’n’Bone Man, sounding very much like a young Louis Armstrong with his beautiful gravelly voice. It’s such a pleasant surprise; in fact Mr R&B was probably responsible for us not leaving early on. Whilst there are a few well written tracks, overall the Rum Committee just don’t do it for us.

The rather lovely Almighty Planets managed to take the audience in a completely different musical direction with their friendly party funk. Those mourning the death of Mean Poppa Lean might be cheered by Almighty Planets’ big sunny sound. The standout track was their cover of SBTRKT’s ‘Wild Fire’, which closed a set of tight, well executed songs.

Suave Debonair are last up and truly earn their crown as the headliners of the evening with their topical cheeky rapping. Popular with Radio 1xtra and Capital FM listeners, it’s not hard to see why: they exude a hugely vibrant stage presence and manage to keep the whole crowd engaged until the very end.
