Whitney, Mon 22nd Feb

Our hearts broke a little over a year ago with the news that Smith Westerns had split. Luckily the infectious hooks have earwormed their way into a new home. Meet Chicago supergroup Whitney.

The man responsible for said noodling, Max Kakacek, has traded the glam power riffs that charged through ‘Dye It Blonde’ for classic country grooves. Together with the soulful croon of Unknown Mortal Orchestra’s Julien Ehrlich, they’ve mined a sound which is less ‘Electric Warrior’ and more ‘After The Goldrush’.

The blissful ‘No Woman’ was highlighted as New Music Of The Day by NME last Monday. Sunburnt and sullen, it’s Avi Buffalo’s whiskey-drunk cousin napping on the porch. Stir in a little of Father John Misty’s melodic melancholy and the results are well worth the accolade.

The album is currently being mastered so we could see a release very soon. Whitney are made up of two guitars as well as bass, keys, horns and drums (which Ehrlich sings behind). They’ve been receiving rave live reviews so catch them on the tiny stage whilst you still can.

Andy started writing because he was always endlessly chewing people's ears off about gigs and new records. Particularly into hip hop, electro and the early noughties guitar scene but enjoys the production on most things. Occasional DJ, will play Kanye West at inappropriate times at parties.
