New In Town in Brighton SOURCE at www.brightonsource.co.uk Brighton’s best listings, music and culture magazine

LOVE THY NEIGHBOUR
Grassroots music in Brighton doesn’t get more collaborative than new label Love Thy Neighbour. You may recognise the name as a kick-ass promoter, but the two-man team’s CV also includes running Sticky Mike’s Frog Bar, previously booking the Freebutt, not to mention being in Esben & The Witch. The label’s first release, on Monday 14th, will be the ‘Blood & Air EP’ by Abi Wade, the gentle but tough pizzicato cello master. The label’s launch party is on Wednesday 9th at the Green Door Store.

PROJECT
More very exciting news from the late Tru on West Street. As well as Hed Kandi taking a chunk of it, it’s also giving birth to a new live venue called Project. With a capacity of 900 it fills a vital gap between the Concorde/Komedia and the Dome for acts on that upper-middle rung. Expect to see the likes of Ash and Lee Perry among the first shows at a venue with solid music heritage – we saw excellent gigs by Mogwai and The Beta Band here when it was the Paradox.

CREATE
As you may have noticed we’ve been shooting our covers at Garage Studios for years, and they’ve just had a major reboot and rebrand. The same talented team now have room to swing a cat in three high-class studios, and freeze the motion with the best Profoto and Bowens lights. Aiming to please all photographers from those on a budget to the very top-end shooters (the main studio is huge), they’re also continuing their incredible courses, only now in a warm classroom. Check out welovecreate.com.

HAND BAKED ARCADE
Get off your PS3 and indulge your addictions at The Hand Baked Arcade where you’ll explode joy of retro gaming joy via classic consoles such as SNES and Mega Drive. Unlike those antisocial hours of online multiplayer with screaming scoundrels, you can bring your mates along for a 10-player session of Bomberman – if you even have that many friends anymore. So get yourself down to the Blind Tiger on Sunday 13th for a journey back to the good old days.

DARK PARTY
Starting on Thursday 27th, The Haunt will be bringing you Dark Party, a new weekly indie night to cure you of the horrors of bland chart music. With tunes from The Mystery Jets, Caribou, The Strokes, Future Islands and more, Dark Party is sure to have you prowling about to the sound of eclectic indie anthems. So stretch out your skinny jeans to some dynamic melodies whilst racking up lines of cheap Jägerbombs.

REALLYGOODSTOCK
This is a new monthly event performed by comedy rap duo Sanity Valve made up by Mos Prob and Gish’n’chips. Despite rapping about the most menial of subjects from breakfast to puppies, you’ll be left needing a change of underwear before the next gag catches you out again. They are labelled “wordsmiths of the highest order” by the Tuborg Musical Comedy Awards and you can enjoy their fast-paced wordplay at the Caroline of Brunswick beginning Saturday 5th.

ATM STUDIOS
Music college Access To Music has teamed up with Brighton Electric to completely revamp Scream Studios. ATM’s students will now enjoy free access to the quality recording facilities, which should encourage young prospects to jam their way to prominence. The studios are also available to hire for the public in the evenings and at weekends. See the facilities for yourself at their open days on Saturday 19th from 11am.
