Scalarama Film Festival

September is upon us and that means Brighton’s film fans are spoilt for choice with this year’s Scalarama Film Festival. For the whole month, venues across the city and beyond will be showing classic, rare and locally made films.

Old punks should head for Bom-Bane’s in George Street where for £7.77 you get a meal and a movie – films include Derek Jarman’s Jubilee, and The Great Rock ‘n’ Roll Swindle. Fabrica are embracing the legendary Kings Cross cinema the festival is named after with Scala-style favourites such as the saucy underground cannibal crime caper Singapore Sling and the rarely seen British infatuation classic Deep End.

There are workshops and screenings for women over 50 at Sallis Benney and, if you’re quick, you can take a free tour of the Duke of York’s cinema. The Duke’s is celebrating it’s 107th birthday this year and to mark the occasion it’s showing Fritz Lang’s Metropolis with musical accompaniment.

The festival ends with A Cottage On Dartmoor, at Seaford Little Theatre, with a live score composed and performed by Joss Peach.
