VegfestUK Brighton 2018

The Vegan has landed! There has been a seismic shift in the vegan world – where only a few years ago they’d be constantly asked “what DO you eat?” the question has changed to a much more appealing “what would you like to eat?”. Pubs and cafes have finally got the message and many now offer wholly vegan/vegetarian menus or have extensive vegan options. A quick look at Happy Cow will tell you there are 38 vegan friendly locations to eat around the city, 14 of which are completely vegan but we’re sure there are many more places to eat plant-based, cruelty-free food.

Hand-in-hand with these changes is the increase in support for animal rights: hunt sabs are well-organised and have an increased presence at so-called ‘trail-hunts’, even managing to secure prosecutions of some Teflon toffs and their farmyard thugs; live animal exports are rightly protested at many ports and Sea Shepherd (amongst others) campaign tirelessly against the capture and slaughter of cetaceans in Japan and The Faroe Islands.

The annual Vegfest event aims to cover all things vegan-related and with over 70 speakers, 30 performers and 230 stalls they are expecting a record attendance of around 11,000 – a 16% increase on last year. There are also two bars and 19 caterers offering a wide range of animal-free nosh, so there’s sure to be enough information, entertainment and free samples to satisfy both long-term vegans and those just thinking of giving it a try.
