 Calendar: Brighton & Hove

CALENDAR: BRIGHTON & HOVE 2009 North Laine Photography Gallery
This hardy annual is a must for every resident with an eye for the aesthetic who wants to know when high tide is and when the Albion play Scunthorpe. As stunning as the visuals always are, we kind of wish it would give up on the hackneyed old piers and queers photos – very few gay men actually drag up in Brighton and very few others need yet more photos of the skeletal West Pier. But other than that, this is always a beautiful piece of work from a fantastic gallery that more than deserves your business. (NC)

DVD: BRIGHTON WOK: THE LEGEND OF GANJA BOXING
An evil ninja overlord has taken over Brighton and is terrorizing its inhabitants with his army of henchmen. So far, so plausible. The city’s only hope rests on the slim shoulders of Ryu who may or may not be The Chosen One, provided he can master the art of Ganja boxing. This plundering of the kung fu genre is a well-made piece, with some truly inspired comedic touches. The fight scenes look tightly choreographed and there’s even the odd spattering of CGI blood flying around, which in a film as tightly budgeted as this is a genuine surprise. Brighton residents will lap it up. (??)
