Hana Piranha launch new album

SOURCE went along to The Latest Music Bar for Hana Piranha’s launch of ‘Wingspan’, the fifth album released by the alternative rock band. The start time is delayed, due to a drum kit delivery mishap. Fortunately, Self Torque brings up the energy, with his own brand of punk and protest songs.

The second support act is Katja Macabre. This fiery songstress blows us away with her bitchrock-influenced feminist metal. Heavy guitar and drums accompany the singer, who demonstrates incredible control with her powerful vocal performance.

Finally, it is time for the main event. Hana Piranha – fronted by New Zealand-born classically trained instrumentalist and singer, Hana Maria – perform their symphonic, gothic rock. The vocals of a siren combine with gritty guitar riffs, dramatic violins and anthemic choruses, to create a show to remember.

The band kick off with the album’s first single, ‘The Devil Always Pulls Through’, which begins as a piano and solo vocal ballad before developing into an orchestral and emotional track. A riff-laden closing act completes the song. The sound is reminiscent of fellow orchestral rockers Apocalyptica.

The band follows this with songs from their previous album, including the catchy track ‘Double Or Nothing’. The next track from their new album is ‘Only Love Remains’, a heart-wrenching song about the inevitability of change and the transience of life. This one is underlined by a strong bassline.

Hana Maria lays down a powerful and emotional performance. Halfway through now, and Hana Piranha launch into the album’s second single, ‘Lorelei’. This track shakes things up, with an electronic midsection, spoken word vocals and entrancing choruses.

One highlight from the second half of the show is ‘Left Me Here to Die’, with its breathtaking violin solo. The final song of the night is the album’s titular track, ‘Wingspan’, a passionate, guitar riff-driven finale.

Overall we had a great time, and would recommend catching a show featuring any of the night’s acts. ‘Wingspan’ is available on Bandcamp here.
