The Miserable Rich, Thurs 2nd April

They haven’t performed in Brighton for two years but the music of The Miserable Rich will always waft along the twittens and through the pub windows of the North Laine and beyond. Fortunately they are making a return to the stage with a rare show at The Hope & Ruin on Thursday 2nd April.

Recently the band has put out a series of remixes for fan favourites ‘Pisshead’ and ‘Hungover’ about which singer James says “I wrote Pisshead sometime around 2004, when The Miserable Rich was barely more than a glint in our collectively optimistic 20/20 eyes. It was one of the first songs I wrote on a classical guitar I’d bought purely because my left hand refused to cooperate with those skinny steel string necks. Necessity is nylon strings.

Despite persistent rumours, it’s not actually about me. It’s about the drinkers on St James’ Street in Brighton — the ones who’d approach you all bold and bumptious, only to reveal soon after a softer, sadder heart. A little like Brighton itself. And of course, we had to include Hungover. No remix this time, but the alternate version might just be my favourite.”

All the remixes will be available to buy on the compilation Mixed Up Over Time coming out this Spring but until then you can listen to them all on your preferred streaming service here.

Get there early to catch openers the Fred Hills Trio who we last saw play a beautiful jazz/folk set at St. Nicholas Church as part of last year’s Alternative Escape. Check them out on their Bandcamp page here.

The Miserable Rich, with support from The Fred Hills Trio, play at The Hope & Ruin on Thursday 2nd April. Tickets are on sale now from We Got Tickets here.
