Bill Callahan makes a welcome return to Brighton, following his mesmerising in-store show at Resident on 24th February this year, to celebrate the release of his album My Days of 58 on the Drag City label. This time he’ll be performing in the beautiful Theatre Royal, a perfect venue for an audience to bask in his soft, rich, warming, baritone voice which delivers his wry story songs at his own unhurried pace.
In addition to the twenty albums he’s released since 1988, eleven as Smog and nine under his own name, he has published books of sketches, lyrics and a novella. This is a rare opportunity to see a unique and masterful singer-songwriter in a gorgeous setting. His raw take on the American West is sparse, yet wholly fulfilling, underpinned by flashes of humour. This promises to be a very special show.
Opening the show will be Nathan Bowles, a multi-instrumentalist musician and teacher based in North Carolina and a labelmate of Callahan. Brighton gig-goers may remember him as a member of the critically acclaimed old-time group the Black Twig Pickers; a tremendous live act steeped in the local traditions of Appalachian folk music and dance, who played exuberant shows at The Prince Albert and the much-missed Sticky Mike’s Frog Bar in the early 2010s.
Bill Callahan plays Brighton Theatre Royal on Tuesday 6th October.
Tickets are available online at ATG Tickets.
