Club Review: Horse Power

There aren’t many ideas in club promotion really. Clubbing has followed the rough template of Danny Rampling’s acid house night Shoom for the last couple of decades – good music, played loud, and that’s your lot. This collaboration between Somewhere In The Universe and the Concorde is aiming for a little bit more though. Loaded with ideas, they want to get bands and DJs together on the same bill and throw some extra treats into the mix.

So for the first night there was a market with discount rummage sale from American Apparel, Dirty Harry and ace new shop Wolf & Gypsy offering great vintage clothing, while Fat Cat had a stall with free CDs and Magnum Opus gave tattoo advice. SOURCE had a stand too, as did our mates Gang Up magazine. But as fun as that was it’s not going to keep you entertained for a whole night – so it was a good job that the music was a cutting edge as the ideas.

Hotly-tipped from Kitsune acts Chew Lips and The Golden Filter played live while Designer Drugs joined Henron on the decks for the same great electro-tipped dance music (and beyond) that you’d hear at Somewhere’s Friday night sessions at New Hero. There was a healthy raft of hipsters – everyone is young, pretty and cool – but there was absolutely no posing. Proper fun with no attitude with loads to do – that’s a good idea for a start, the rest is gravy.
